Do We Personally Test Every Scooter?
No. Not every scooter featured on PlayScooters has been physically tested by our editorial team.
Some of our articles are based on hands-on use or direct inspection. Others are research-based evaluations created by comparing manufacturer specifications, instruction manuals, product listings, safety information, warranties and feedback from verified owners where available.
We believe it is important to be transparent about this distinction.

The handlebars should generally allow the child to ride in a comfortable, controlled position without needing to reach too high or bend excessively.

Stability is especially important for toddlers and beginners.
For three-wheel scooters, we look at the width between the front wheels, the height of the deck and how readily the scooter tips when turning or stopping.
For two-wheel scooters, we consider whether the wheelbase, deck and steering feel predictable enough for the intended rider.
A lower deck can make it easier for a child to push and maintain balance because the standing foot remains closer to the ground. However, very low decks may have less ground clearance and can catch on raised surfaces.
We consider these trade-offs rather than judging stability from the number of wheels alone.
Steering
Children’s scooters usually use either conventional handlebar steering or a lean-to-steer system.
During testing, we examine:
- How much force is needed to turn
- Whether steering feels smooth
- Whether the scooter responds predictably
- The turning radius
- Whether the mechanism returns towards the centre
- Whether the rider is likely to oversteer

Lean-to-steer scooters can help young riders develop balance, but some children may need time to understand the movement. Conventional steering may feel more familiar to older children but can be less stable for complete beginners.

Deck Grip and Riding Position
The deck is where the rider maintains contact with the scooter, so its design can affect both comfort and control.
We check:

- Whether shoes slide during ordinary riding
A wide deck may help a beginner feel secure, but it can also make pushing less natural when the deck is excessively bulky. A narrow deck may be lighter and easier to manoeuvre but provide less room for uncertain riders.

Wheels and Ride Quality
Wheel size and material influence how a scooter feels on different surfaces.

Most children’s kick scooters use a rear fender brake operated by pressing down with one foot.

- Whether the brake engages consistently

- Whether the rear wheel locks unexpectedly
- Whether the fender becomes excessively hot after repeated use

Braking distance varies according to rider weight, speed, surface conditions and technique. Our observations are therefore not a guarantee of performance in every situation.
Children should practise braking at low speed in a controlled area before riding near other people, slopes, roads or obstacles.
Folding and Portability
For folding scooters, we test how practical the folding system is in everyday use.
