Gotrax KS1 Kids Scooter Review: Safe, Smooth, and Fun

For a lightweight and confidence-building scooter for a little one, the Gotrax KS1 is one of the best-balanced starter scooters on the market right now. I used it with kids ranging from 3 to 7 years old and the thing that I noticed first is that the kids were very quickly comfortable to step on and ride it. It’s clear that the KS1 has been designed around safety for beginners and making it easy for kids to learn, but it also does not compromise on fun factor.

Here’s my full hands-on review of it, including parent reviews, as well as who I feel the Gotrax KS1 is best suited for.

Build Quality and First Impressions

The KS1 comes mostly assembled, which is a real relief. All I had to do was to push the handlebar down until I heard and felt a click. A 5-second “assembly” and it really does deliver on the “easy to assemble” promise.

On first impression, this scooter just feels very sturdy compared to other cheap scooters you might get from the toy store. The 5-inch anti-slip deck is wide enough to allow more wobbly younger kids to adjust their feet a bit, the frame does not flex or wobble with older (6–7 years old) kids stepping on and at only 5.1 lbs, this is also a very lightweight scooter. Kids can pick it up themselves, and parents can just chuck it in the trunk with no effort.

It’s extremely light, but it doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy at all. The deck feels solid, the components lock tightly in place, and the handlebar stem does not move around while riding.

Kids Love the LED Light-Up Wheels

The key standout feature of the KS1 is of course the bright LED wheels and yes — they do really glow in the dark. The lights are motion-powered so no batteries are needed. This was the first thing the kids noticed during the testing too.

The two benefits of the LEDs are:

  • Pure fun – Kids just get a kick out of their wheels flashing as they ride
  • Added visibility – Parents feel more at ease when riding at dusk

I read several parent reviews where the glowing wheels were noted as the feature that their kids would “want to ride everywhere” and in the evenings in particular.

Adjustable Handlebar for Kids of Different Ages

The handlebar can be adjusted to 3 different heights — 29.9”, 31.9” and 33.7”, which makes it suitable for kids ages 2 to 8 (depending on height). I tried it with a bunch of kids of all sizes, and at each height setting it felt perfectly stable. There was no shaking or looseness when the handlebar was locked in place.

Parents really like this because:

  • You don’t have to buy a new scooter for your child every year
  • Brothers and sisters of different ages can share it easily
  • Taller kids (6–7 years old) still find it a comfortable ride

A parent of a 7-year-old said it was “the perfect size” and still rolled smoothly.

Lean-to-Steer Makes it Safer for Learning

The KS1, like most beginner scooters, also uses the Lean-to-Steer technology, where kids turn by leaning their bodies rather than twisting the handlebars. This is great for learning two things:

  • Balance
  • Coordination

For toddlers and younger kids who have never ridden a scooter before, this is one of the safest steering options because it does not allow sharp, sudden turns. In several reviews I read that the scooter “is a little hard to turn” at first but that is intentional – it avoids tipping and makes it easy for beginners to gradually build control.

Smooth and Stable Ride Quality

One of the big advantages the KS1 has over cheaper toy-store scooters is its wheels. The ABEC-7 bearings mean that the glide is very smooth even on not-so-smooth surfaces like a park path or community pavements. Kids do not get a “catching” or vibrating feeling as they ride.

Other ride quality highlights are:

  • Wide, stable 3-wheel design for easy balancing
  • Responsive rear mudguard brake that is easy for small feet to push
  • Deck grip that prevents slipping, even with dusty shoes

This scooter was designed with young, first-time riders in mind.

Extremely Parent-Friendly: Quick to Disassemble and Easy to Carry

For me, this was one of the most parent-friendly scooters I have reviewed. The red button disassembly system lets you detach the handlebar in just a few seconds. This is useful for:

  • Throwing it into the car
  • Storing it in small places
  • Taking it on trips or holidays
  • Keeping in a backpack-style stroller compartment

At just 5.1 lbs, it is lighter than many of its competitors, including the Micro Mini and Jetson range.

Real-World Parent Reviews

Parents generally rate the KS1 extremely highly and nearly every review I read mentioned how sturdy and smooth it felt for the price. Here are the patterns that I noted from verified parent reviews:

Parents Love:

  • LED wheels (glow “awesome at night”)
  • Sturdy for the price
  • Adjustable height for multiple ages
  • Easy 5-second assembly
  • Safety and Lean-to-steer technology
  • Great for 3–7 year-olds, and many using it up to 8 years old

Parents disliked:

  • Very few negatives noted, if any
  • Representative Comments:
  • “My nephew absolutely loves it and takes it everywhere”
  • “Perfect for my 5 year old, safe, fun and durable”
  • “Folds easily for travel. Both my 4 and 7 year old use it.”
  • “Very cute and bright colours. Hard to turn but I think that is intentional for toddlers.”
  • “Lightweight but feels solid. We highly recommend it for beginner riders!”

Across all the reviews, there were no glaring negatives – just the steering being intentionally stiff for beginners.

Who Is the Gotrax KS1 Best For?

The KS1 is a great pick for:

  • Toddlers learning to scooter
  • Kids ages 3 to 7
  • Parents looking for a safe, stable beginner scooter
  • Families looking for lightweight, travel-friendly model
  • Kids who like glowing, light-up wheels
  • Parents who want something durable at a reasonable price

It is less suitable for:

  • Older kids who need more speed
  • Kids ready for a two-wheel scooter
  • Growing riders who want tricks or tight turns
  • If your child is still working on learning their balance and coordination, the KS1 is a great value starter scooter.
